History of Leningrad
Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg, is a city located in western Russia. It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 and served as the capital of the Russian Empire until 1918. It was renamed Leningrad in 1924 in honor of Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution.
During World War II, Leningrad was besieged by German and Finnish forces for over 900 days, causing widespread starvation and death among the city's residents. Despite the siege, the city did not fall to the enemy and the siege was lifted in 1944.
After the war, Leningrad was rebuilt and became an important center for culture and education, with many museums and universities. In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the city's original name, St. Petersburg, was restored. Today, it is a major tourist destination known for its beautiful architecture, art, and history.
